People. And Animals...

When I look at other people's comics with various animal-people hybrids, it looks strange to me, and I usually don't find it appealing. But when I look at my own comic it doesn't seem strange. There must be something wrong with that.

Anyways, here's a quick sketch of John.

Bad Hair Day

I was trying to do this exercise where you make a storyboard of a memory from childhood. It was really hard for me to think of anything that wasn't too bizarre or tragic... Anyways I finally settled on hair, because, as a black woman, it's always been a big issue, but really it's hilarious that it should cause so many problems.

The premise: So it was the norm back in the 80's, before the awesomeness of the flat iron was invented, for little black girls to have their hair combed with something called a "hot comb". It was a ceramic comb, that you literally had to put on the stove to make hot, which would then be used to straighten the hair and make it more manageable. I don't know if people still use this... I sure as hell wouldn't. That thing was scary! Just think, if mom hit your ear by mistake - ouch!

Isn't it scary folks?

Of course, you couldn't get wet after all this trouble, 'cause the hair would just go back to its puffy state.
Anyways this is just me messing around. I have no idea if this actually works...

scratchy drawings

The Animation festival was great, especially Ronnie Del Carmen's Up presentation. He talked about doodling, "scratchy drawings" he called them. It was amazing! I felt like someone had given me permission to doodle again! For the longest time, since college really, I felt like a sketchbook had to be all nice, beautiful works of art and I just can't pull that off! I want to doodle!

Doodles for evah!

cafe sketches

Hadn't done any cafe sketching in a long time. I miss it so much, so to celebrate the Ottawa Animation festival this weekend, I walked my butt to a cafe and did some sketching. It was actually quite pleasant, even by myself. Didn't get many good drawings though.

A sense of fun...

I've lost my sense of fun when it comes to drawing. I hardly even draw in a sketchbook anymore. I would like to find it again.

P.S. I kinda like how this looks without the outline.

P.P.S. I like plaid.

SceneIt Stills...

Every time I think, maybe I'll just get rid of this blog, there's a new reason to post something. A game I had the pleasure to work on is now online. It's called Scene It, based on that fun board game. Anyways, now I can show some of the work I did, so here are a few of my favourites! It was really one of the most fun jobs I've ever done. Too bad they never last...
